As people gather around the fireplace or the dinner table, there is a natural desire for entertainment that goes beyond staring at screens. To begin, remove one Jack from the deck and declare that he is your personal detective. Hand the remaining cards to a friend and ask them to cut the deck in half, creating two piles. Have them choose one pile, look at the top card, memorize it, and place it back on top of that pile. Next, instruct them to place the Jack face-up on top of the other pile. Finally, have them place the pile with the Jack directly on top of the pile containing their secret card.The magic happens during the reveal. Have them count the cards in their hand silently, memorize that number, and then place the clump back on top of the deck.Now, pick up the deck and state that you will find their card by spelling a magical phrase. Pick a phrase that matches the number of cards you think they took, or simply use the name of your key card. A foolproof method is to deal cards one by one from the top to the bottom of the deck while asking them to think of their number. Because you know the original position of your key card relative to their chosen number, you can easily track its location. By dealing out the cards to spell the name of the card, the final letter will land exactly on the spectator’s chosen card, leaving them thoroughly mystified by your spelling accuracy.

Before presenting the trick, separate the deck into all red cards and all black cards. Keep this separation hidden from your audience. Fan out the top half of the deck (all red cards) and ask someone to pick one. Then, fan out the bottom half (all black cards) and ask a second person to pick one. Instruct them to memorize their cards and show them to the rest of the room.While they are looking at their cards, subtly switch the positions of the two halves of the deck in your hands.
